Of the 42 charm and pendant listings in the tables below, 38 state the chain is not included, none says a chain is included, and the other 4 do not say clearly. Stone-set charms hang from their own bail, and the listing gives its opening in millimeters. No listing we reviewed mentions a jump ring.

What is the difference between a charm and a pendant?
A pendant hangs from a necklace chain. A charm is usually smaller and can hang from a chain, a charm bracelet or a charm holder. Many of our pieces are listed as “Charm/Pendant” because they work either way: the stone-set pieces say each one “hangs from its bail on a chain or charm holder of your choice.”
Is a chain included?
In practice, no. The newer stone-set charms and the diamond pendants carry a “Chain: Not included” line in their details. Several of our gold charms say they are sold on their own, with a chain or bracelet not included. A few older listings never say either way, and for those the honest answer is: not stated, ask Concierge. We have not found a single charm or pendant listing that says a chain is included.

Is there a bail or a jump ring?
A bail is the loop a pendant hangs from. Where a listing gives a bail opening, the bail comes with the piece; the stone-set listings say the charm “hangs from its bail.” None of these listings says whether the bail is soldered in place or hinged, so if that matters, for example because you want to slide the charm onto a thick chain or clip it to a bracelet, ask before you order.
A jump ring is a small wire ring used to join a charm to a bracelet or a clasp to a chain. None of the charm and pendant listings we reviewed mentions one. How do I add a chain separately?
- Find the bail opening. It is in the product details, in millimeters (for example 5.4 × 2.4 mm). If it is not stated, ask our Concierge.
- Compare it with the chain’s width. Chain listings state width in millimeters. The chain must be thinner than the smallest dimension of the bail opening, with some room to move.
- Check the clasp end. To put a pendant on, one end of the chain has to pass through the bail. If the clasp or its end ring is wider than the opening, the pendant will not go on without opening a ring.
- Choose the length. Shorter lengths sit at the collarbone; longer ones fall lower. Our guide to choosing a chain for a pendant explains lengths and styles.
- Match the metal. Pair 14K yellow gold with 14K yellow gold, and sterling silver with sterling or white metals, so color and wear stay consistent. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, a karat or “sterling” mark is a statement of metal content, so check the listing for each.
Some real pairings show how this works. The 14k Yellow Gold Diamond Cut Cable Link Chain (0.68 mm) is a fine 0.68 mm chain with a spring ring, offered in 16 to 20 inches; it is thin enough for small openings such as the 1.4 mm bail on the 14K Yellow Gold .03 ct. Natural Diamond Love Charm/Pendant, though the clasp end should still be checked. The Sterling Silver Rhodium Plated Round Cable Chain (1.50 mm), with a lobster clasp and lengths from 16 to 30 inches, suits larger openings like the 5.4 × 2.4 mm bail on the sterling silver heart charm.
