Choosing a Chain: Link, Width and Length
Three numbers describe a chain, and all three are listed on every product page here: the link style, the width in millimeters, and the length in inches. Getting the combination right matters more than the metal does.
Link style sets the character. Curb and Miami Cuban links lie flat and read as substantial at any width. Figaro alternates long and short links for a broken rhythm. Box and Franco are square in section and sit densely, which makes them good for pendants because they resist twisting. Rope is made of interwoven strands and throws the most light. Herringbone lies perfectly flat and is the most formal, but it is also the most easily kinked — a permanent crease is not repairable.
Width does most of the work visually. Under about 2 mm a chain reads as a pendant carrier rather than a piece in its own right; from roughly 4 mm up it stands alone. Length decides where it sits: 18 inches falls at the collarbone on most men, 20 to 22 inches sits below it and over a shirt collar, and 24 inches and longer sits mid-chest. If the chain is meant to carry a pendant, going one size longer than a bare chain usually looks better.
