Getting the Length and the Weight Right
Most necklace decisions come down to where the piece sits. On a typical adult, 16 inches sits at the base of the throat, 18 inches at the collarbone, 20 to 22 inches just below it, and 24 inches and beyond on the chest. Every listing states its length, so the useful thing to do before buying is measure a necklace you already wear and own that number.
A necklace is either the whole piece or a chain carrying something. If you are buying a pendant, the chain has to suit its weight rather than its width: a heavy pendant on a fine link will wear at the bail long before the chain itself gives out. If you are buying the chain as the piece, the link style and construction do all the work, which is covered on the chains page.
Metal is the last decision, not the first. Yellow, white and rose gold differ only in the alloy mixed with the gold, so a 14k piece contains the same 58.5 per cent gold in all three colours; white gold is usually rhodium plated and will want replating eventually, which is ordinary maintenance rather than a defect. Can I wear more than one at once?
Yes, and the usual approach is to separate lengths by at least two inches so the pieces sit apart rather than tangling. Mixing metals is a matter of taste, not a rule.
