Getting the Length Right

Necklace length is the decision people most often get wrong online, because the same necklace sits differently on different frames. Most finished necklaces here come in a single 18-inch length, which falls at the collarbone on most women; a few are 16 or 17 inches, sitting closer to the base of the throat, and a few are 20 inches or longer. The length is stated on every listing. If you are unsure, 18 inches is the safest single choice.

Most of the necklaces in this collection are 14K yellow gold, with a sterling silver group and a few two-tone and tri-color pieces. The designs run from link and bead necklaces to initial and heart pendants, pearl pieces and gemstone stations. Initial necklaces come in several letters, and heart designs range from open outlines to puffed and reversible pendants.

If several necklaces will be worn together, spacing them about two inches apart stops them tangling and lets each one be seen. A short necklace with a small pendant layered over a longer plain chain is the easiest combination to get right.

Pendant weight is the practical constraint. A fine cable chain is elegant on its own but will bow under a heavy pendant, while box, rope and Franco chains are denser in section and carry weight without distorting. Where a necklace is sold complete, the chain has already been matched to the piece. Lariat and double-strand designs drape differently from a single chain, so check the length and photographs on the listing.

Is a necklace here the same as a chain?

A necklace here is a finished piece. Chains are sold on their own to wear alone or with a pendant you choose separately.

Is 14K gold good for everyday wear?

Yes. 14K is durable enough for daily wear and does not tarnish, though it can pick up surface marks over time that a jeweler can polish out.
