Each IMPERVORA personalized piece has a fixed character limit, from a single initial up to 20 characters including spaces, engraved in one line on the front. You type your text, choose a font, and we email you a proof of the exact text, font and placement. Engraving starts only after you approve it, and you can change or cancel free of charge until then.
Because engraved pieces are made for you, they cannot be returned for a change of mind or for text you approved. If a piece arrives damaged, defective, not as described, or engraved differently from the approved proof, you are covered. The details, and practical tips for fitting names and dates into small spaces, follow below.
How many characters can I engrave?
The limit is set by the size of the engraving area and is printed in every product title. Spaces count as characters. All 13 pieces in our personalized line are engraved in a single line on the front.

Engraving area figures are the manufacturer’s specifications as shown on each product page. On bracelets the figure is the plate size; on charms and pendants it is the size of the piece.
Which fonts can I choose?
Twelve of the thirteen pieces offer the same nine fonts in the product’s Font menu:
- Lucida
- Old English
- Script MT Bold
- Colonna
- Edwardian Script
- Bookman
- Helvetica
- Typewriter
- P22 Corinthia
The Personalized Sterling Silver Circle Charm offers six of these: Lucida, Old English, Script MT Bold, Bookman, Typewriter and P22 Corinthia. Colonna, Edwardian Script and Helvetica are not offered on that piece.
How do I pick a font that stays readable?
- Small areas favor simple fonts. On narrow plates such as 3 to 3.5 mm bars, a clean font like Helvetica, Lucida or Bookman keeps each letter distinct.
- Script fonts suit names, not long dates. Edwardian Script, Script MT Bold and P22 Corinthia read beautifully as a first name, but strings of numerals can blur together in a flowing script.
- Avoid all capitals in script and blackletter. Old English and script capitals are ornate; a word set entirely in capitals in these fonts is hard to read. Use a capital first letter and lowercase after it.
- Typewriter and Colonna are statement fonts. They work well for one short word or a set of initials.
How does the proof and approval process work?
- Enter your text in the engraving box on the product page, within the character limit. Engraving is required on these pieces; they are not sold blank.
- Choose your font from the Font menu.
- Place your order. We then email you a proof showing your exact text, font and placement.
- Check and approve. Engraving starts only after you approve. Until you approve, and before production starts, you can change your text or cancel free of charge.
- Production and shipping. Pieces are laser engraved, with no color fill, and usually ship within 2 to 4 business days after your approval. Tracking is emailed when your parcel ships.
The proof is your chance to catch a typo. Read it letter by letter, check the spacing and the date format, and confirm the font before you reply.
Can I return an engraved piece?
Pieces engraved with your own text are made to order and cannot be resold, so they cannot be returned or exchanged if you change your mind, want a different size or style, or if the text, spelling, spacing or font you entered and then approved contains an error.
That does not limit your rights when something is wrong on our side. Contact us within 30 days of delivery, with your order number and a photo, if a personalized piece:
- arrives damaged,
- has a manufacturing defect,
- is not the item you ordered (wrong piece, metal, size or quantity),
- does not match its product description or photos, or
- is engraved differently from the text, font or placement you approved, including spelling, characters or spacing.
We will remake it correctly at no charge or, if you prefer, refund you in full, including original shipping. When we need the piece back, we send a prepaid return label. The full terms are in the “Personalized and engraved jewelry” section of our return and refund policy.
Tips for names, dates and initials
Dates
Count every digit and separator. “06.14.2025” uses 10 characters, “6.14.25” uses 7, and Roman numerals such as “VI.XIV.MMXXV” use 12. On a 6-character piece, a short form such as “2025” or “6.14” fits; on a 20-character bar you have room for a full date with a name.
Names and short phrases
- Spaces count. “Mom & Dad” is 9 characters.
- If a phrase is close to the limit, drop a space or use an ampersand rather than “and”.
- Fewer characters usually engrave larger and read more clearly on a small plate.
Initials and monograms
We engrave text exactly as you type it, in the order you type it. If you want a traditional monogram order, type the letters in that order yourself. Periods between initials count as characters, so “A.B.C.” uses 6 characters and will not fit a 3-character piece; “ABC” will.
How do I care for engraved sterling silver and stainless steel?
Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver, which is why it is marked .925; the Federal Trade Commission’s Jewelry Guides (16 CFR Part 23) set out how silver content may be described. Sterling silver tarnishes through normal reaction with air; this is expected and reversible. As our jewelry care guide explains, polish with a dedicated silver cloth using straight strokes rather than circles, and use a silver-specific cleaner for heavier tarnish. Do not use a silver dip on pieces set with stones, such as the dog tag charm with lab-grown diamonds.
- Engraved lettering. Our engraving is laser engraved with no color fill. Light tarnish can collect in the letters; a soft brush with mild soapy water reaches into them better than a cloth.
- Plated pieces. The Dog Tag Charm is listed as rhodium-plated sterling silver. Avoid abrasive polishes on plated surfaces, which can wear the plating over time.
- Stainless steel. Wipe with warm water and a little mild soap, rinse and dry fully. Stainless steel does not tarnish the way silver does.
- Everyday habits. Take pieces off for cleaning with household chemicals; bleach and ammonia-based cleaners can pit sterling silver.
