Bails, Clasps, Connectors and Safety Catches Explained

Quick answer: A bail is the loop that lets a pendant hang on a chain, a clasp closes the chain, a jump ring or connector joins parts together, and a safety catch is a second lock that keeps a piece on if the main closure opens. For security, a lobster clasp or a box clasp with a safety latch is the usual choice for valuable pieces. For pendants, the number that matters most is the bail’s inside opening.

These parts are called findings. They are small, but they decide whether a pendant sits well, whether a chain stays fastened and whether an earring stays in. This guide explains each type, gives real dimensions from the findings we sell as supplies, and points to finished pieces in our collection whose product pages state exactly which findings they use.

What is a bail, and which type do I need?

A bail joins a pendant to a chain. Some are part of the pendant itself; others are separate findings a jeweler attaches. The style changes how the pendant hangs, how easily it comes off the chain and what it can be attached to.

Bail typeHow it attachesTypical use
Pinch bailTwo prongs or pads squeeze into holes drilled in a bead, stone or pearlDrilled briolettes, pearls and beads
Snap-on bailHinged ends snap closed through a loop on the pendantAdding a bail to a pendant that has only a small ring; can be removed by a jeweler
Tapered bailA loop that narrows toward the pendant, usually soldered onClassic pendants; the taper helps the pendant face forward
Rabbit-ear bailA loop with two small “ears” that a jeweler solders to the back of the pendantMounting a bail flat against a pendant or setting, sometimes with a pad
Circle bailA simple round ringSmall charms and drops
Enhancer bailA hinged clip that opens and clamps around a chain or strandMaking a pendant removable, or hanging it from a pearl strand or heavier chain

How do I read a bail opening?

Bail sizes are given as the inside opening, in millimeters, often as height × width. Our Settings & Findings Guide sets out the rule: the opening must be larger than the thickest part of the chain that has to pass through it, including the clasp if the bail has to slide over it.

Real examples show how much this varies. Among the bails we list as supplies, a small 14K yellow gold circle bail opens to 2 × 2 mm inside; tapered bails run about 3 × 2.2 mm; a 14K white gold rabbit-ear bail with pad opens to 4 × 2.5 mm; and a 14K yellow gold tapered snap-on bail opens to 4.6 × 2.5 mm. On finished pieces, the Sterling Silver .02 ct. Natural Diamond Heart Charm/Pendant lists a 5.4 × 2.4 mm bail opening, while the 14K Yellow Gold .03 ct. Natural Diamond Love Charm/Pendant lists 1.4 mm, which suits only fine chains.

Which clasp is the most secure?

Clasp sizes are given as length × width. Choose one in proportion to the chain, and attach it with a jump ring in matching metal. A replacement 14K white gold standard-weight lobster clasp in our supplies range measures 7 × 2.75 mm, a common size for everyday chains.

ToggleA bar passes through a ring and rests across itEasy and decorative; relies on tension, so it can slip on a loose fitNone currently in stock
MagneticTwo magnets pull togetherEasiest to fasten, but can release under a snag; use with cautionNot offered

A note on magnetic clasps: they help people with limited dexterity, but they release under a sideways pull more easily than a mechanical clasp, so they are a poor choice for valuable pieces unless combined with a safety. Anyone with an implanted medical device should follow their doctor’s advice about magnets.

What connects the parts together?

A jump ring is a small ring of wire that joins a clasp to a chain or a charm to a bail. An open jump ring can be twisted open and closed; a soldered (closed) ring cannot open, which makes it more secure for a clasp. Connectors and links do the same job between larger elements, such as the links of a station necklace or a spacer charm.

Some necklaces add a second jump ring along the chain so it can be worn at a shorter length. The 14K Yellow Gold North Star Hexagon Necklace is described as secured with a spring ring clasp and an adjustable jump ring at 16 inches. Charms and pendants are different: none of the charm and pendant pages we reviewed mentions a jump ring, so see what comes with charms and pendants before you assume one is included.

What safety catches are there?

On bracelets and necklaces

  • Box clasp with safety latch: a small hinged latch on the side of the box locks over a pin. The Lab Grown Round Diamond Tennis Bracelet in 14k White Gold (8 cctw F/G VS2/SI1) is built with a box clasp with hidden safety, and the 14k Yellow Gold High Polish Thick Braided Bracelet (8.80 mm) is described as a box clasp with added safety.
  • Figure-eight safety: a hinged loop shaped like an 8 that flips over a pin beside the main clasp. It is a common second lock on tennis bracelets and heavier necklaces.
  • Safety chain: a short chain linking both sides of the clasp, so the piece stays on the wrist if the clasp opens.

Friction backs loosen with use, so check them now and then and replace any that slide on too easily. Screw backs and locking backs are favored for valuable studs because they need a deliberate action to remove. Note that pierced earrings cannot be returned once purchased, so check the back style on the product page before you order.

How do I check that a finding is still secure?

  • Open and close each clasp. It should snap shut firmly and not open when you tug the chain.
  • Look at jump rings closely. Any visible gap means a link can slip out.
  • Check the inside of a bail where it rubs the chain. Metal wears there over years.
  • Test safety latches: each should click closed and hold.
  • Slide earring backs onto the post; if one moves without resistance, replace it.

If anything has worn thin or will not close, stop wearing the piece and see a jeweler. Replacing a jump ring or clasp is a routine repair.

Can I buy bails and clasps on their own?

Yes. We sell findings, settings and replacement clasps as supplies through the IMPERVORA Etsy shop, not on this site. Each listing gives the manufacturer’s dimensions; our Settings & Findings Guide explains how to read them. Gold findings are offered in 10K, 14K and 18K, where 10K is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.5% and 18K is 75%, in line with the karat definitions in the FTC Jewelry Guides. Allow normal manufacturing tolerance on all dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a bail and a jump ring?

A bail is the loop or fitting a pendant hangs from, sized for a chain to pass through. A jump ring is a small wire ring used to join parts, such as a clasp to a chain or a charm to a bail.

Which clasp is best for a fine chain?

Fine chains usually carry a spring ring or a small lobster clasp. Choose the clasp in proportion to the chain, and check that it fits through the bail if the pendant has to slide over it.

Do I need a safety catch on a tennis bracelet?

It is strongly advisable. A box clasp with a side safety latch or a figure-eight safety gives a second lock if the main clasp is knocked open.

Can a jeweler change the bail on a pendant?

Usually, yes. A snap-on bail can be added to a pendant with a small loop, and a soldered bail can be replaced by a jeweler. Check the new bail’s inside opening against your chain first.
