Studs, Hoops and How They Fasten

Earrings are the one category where the fastening matters as much as the design, because it decides both comfort and how likely the earring is to be lost. Friction backs — the small push-on posts most studs ship with — are quick but loosen over a day of wear. Screw backs thread onto the post and are far more secure, which is why they are the sensible choice for anything with a stone worth replacing. Leverbacks and omega backs close with a hinged clasp and hold heavier drops without dragging on the lobe.

Studs sit flush and read as jewelry you never take off. Hoops are measured by outside diameter: around 15 to 20 mm sits close to the lobe, 30 to 40 mm reads as a statement, and anything beyond that is deliberately dramatic. Weight is worth checking on larger hoops — a wide hoop in solid gold is noticeably heavier than a hollow one of the same size, and heavier earrings stretch a piercing over years of daily wear.

For diamond studs, the figure quoted is usually the total carat weight of the pair, so a 1 cttw pair holds roughly half a carat per ear. Two pairs with identical cttw can look quite different depending on cut quality and setting height.
