Link, Width and Length
Link style sets the character of a chain. Curb and Miami Cuban links lie flat and read as substantial at any width. Figaro alternates long and short links for a broken rhythm. Box and Franco are square in section and sit densely, which makes them good pendant carriers because they resist twisting. Rope is made of interwoven strands and throws the most light. Herringbone lies perfectly flat and is the most formal of all, but it is also the most easily kinked, and a permanent crease cannot be repaired.
Width does most of the visual work. Under about 2 mm a chain reads as a carrier for a pendant rather than a piece in its own right; from roughly 4 mm upward it stands alone. Length decides where it sits, and the lengths stocked here run from 16 to 30 inches.
If a chain is meant to carry a pendant, choosing one size longer than a bare chain usually looks better, and a denser link – box, rope or Franco – will carry the weight without bowing the way a fine cable chain does.
