Men’s Chain and Bracelet Guide: Length, Width and Fit

Short answer: in our view, the most dependable way to choose a chain length is to measure one that already sits where you like it, laid flat from end to end with the clasp included. If there is no such chain, measure around the neck along the path the chain will take. The retailer guides we checked describe 20 inches as the usual starting length for men, sitting around or just below the collarbone, with 22 and 24 inches falling lower on the chest. These are conventions from retailers, not a standard, and the same length sits differently on different necks. Width is a style choice: read the width in millimetres and the clasp on the listing before you order. For a bracelet, measure the wrist and compare it with the length on the listing.

“Men’s” is a merchandising label. Anyone can wear these chains, and the advice is the same whoever wears one.

Why length is easy to get wrong

If you are buying a chain for yourself or for someone else, you usually cannot try it on first. An inch figure does not tell you where the chain will rest, since that depends on the neck, and millimetre widths are hard to picture. A chain that sits higher or lower than expected costs you return shipping to send back, and one that has been shortened cannot come back at all.

Measure first

  • Measure a chain you already wear. One retailer’s guide to men’s chain lengths says: “Lay the chain flat and measure it from end to end, including the clasp.” If you are buying a gift, borrow a chain he already wears and measure it the same way.
  • If there is no chain to copy, measure the neck. Another retailer’s guide says: “Wrap the tape around your neck, following the same path your chain would take, typically just above the collarbone for a standard hang, then mark where the ends meet.”
  • Or start from the base of the neck. The first guide gives a different method: wrap a soft tape loosely around the base of the neck, then add “2 to 4 inches to estimate your preferred necklace length, depending on how much drop you want.” That is one retailer’s range, not a rule, and it applies only to a base-of-neck measurement, not to one already taken along the chain’s path.

Where each length usually sits

The two retailer guides describe each length on a man in much the same way, and both call 20 inches the most common length for men. An expert answer on one online marketplace calls 20 inches “the average length for a men’s necklace” and adds: “At this length, a necklace will usually fall to the collarbone.”

LengthWhere retailer guides place it
18 inAt the base of the neck, a close fit; one guide says men choose it less often
20 inJust below the collarbone; described by both as the most common length for men
22 inThe upper chest, a few inches below the collarbone
24 inMid-chest
26 to 30 inThe lower chest or near the sternum (first guide only)

Our guide to choosing a chain for a pendant describes the same lengths for an average adult neck. It places the shorter lengths a little lower, for example 18 inches just below the collarbone, and puts 22 and 24 inches in the same places, the upper chest and mid chest. It also notes that “on a larger neck every length sits a little higher”. Read both tables as typical positions, not measurements. Some retailer guides also match lengths to height or build; we leave those out, because they are styling opinions, not measurements. If a cross or medal will hang on the chain, the pendant guide covers bail fit and drop.

Width in millimetres

Chain width on our listings is the manufacturer’s stated width in millimetres. To picture a width, hold a ruler across a link of a chain you already own. A wider chain looks bolder, and link style changes the look too: a flat curb link reads differently from a round cable link of the same width.

Width does not tell you how much metal is in the chain; how the links are made matters too. Our guide to solid, semi-solid and hollow gold chains explains why, and how to compare listed weights. Length changes weight too: a longer chain of the same design weighs more. On the two chains below, the Weight line in the product details changes when you choose a length, while the Approximate Weight line shows a single figure. Compare the Weight line, at the same length and in the same style.

The style table in our pendant chain guide describes cable, box, rope, curb, Figaro and other common links. We do not rank link styles for durability here, because we found no reliable source that measures it.

Clasps on heavier chains and bracelets

The listings linked below state their fastening in the Clasp line of the product details, so check that line on any piece you are considering.

  • Lobster clasp. A clasp with a lever you press with a fingertip. As our pendant chain guide puts it, a lobster clasp “is usually a little larger and easier to handle” than a spring ring.
  • Box clasp. A tongue that slides into a box and clicks shut. Some box clasps add a safety latch on the side; our tennis bracelet fit guide explains how a second lock works. If a listing names only one fastening, don’t assume it has a second lock.

Bracelets: measure the wrist

Many bracelet listings, including ours below, give a single length, so measure before you order. Our tennis bracelet fit guide explains how: measure snugly next to the wrist bone, where a bracelet sits, then add the room sizing guides suggest, from about half an inch to an inch, depending on how much you like it to move. The same guide suggests measuring a bracelet that already fits, closed, from end to end with the clasp included. Compare your number with the length on the listing.

If it does not fit when it arrives

When the chain or bracelet arrives, lay it flat and measure it end to end against your number before anyone alters it. A jeweler can sometimes shorten a chain, depending on how it is built, but that is an alteration, so decide on length while the piece is still returnable.

Under our return and refund policy, a return must be postmarked within 30 days of delivery and be “Unworn, unaltered, and free of damage, scratches, or signs of wear”, in its original packaging and “With all original tags, certificates, and documentation attached and intact”. The policy also states: “Items showing wear, resizing, engraving, repair, or alteration by any third party cannot be accepted.”

  • Email Concierge@impervora.com with your order number and the reason for return first. Returns need a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number.
  • The policy says: “For all other returns, including change of mind and fit, the customer is responsible for return shipping.” Original shipping is refunded only where the return results from our error. There is no restocking fee. The policy strongly recommends an insured, tracked service, because a return remains your risk until it reaches us.
  • A different length is handled as a return and a separate new order.
  • Custom, personalized or engraved pieces and final sale items cannot be returned.
