How to Choose an Engagement Ring

Most engagement ring advice starts with the diamond. That is the wrong end. The stone is the most expensive decision, so it should be the last one you make – after you know what she actually wears, what the ring has to survive, and what you are prepared to spend.

Here is a sequence that works.

1. Set the budget first, and set it honestly

Ignore the old rule about a number of months’ salary. It was invented by an advertising agency and it has no basis in anything. A budget is whatever you can spend without it becoming a problem, and that is a private number.

Deciding it first is what makes every later choice easy, because almost every subsequent decision is a trade-off within that number rather than an addition to it.

2. Work out the metal from what she already wears

This is the single most reliable signal available to you, and it costs nothing. Look at what is already on her hands and ears. Is it warm yellow, cool white, or pink? People are remarkably consistent about this, and a ring in the wrong metal is worn less regardless of what is set in it.

If everything is white, you are choosing between white gold and platinum – that comparison is here. If it is warm, yellow or rose gold. If it is genuinely mixed, a two-tone setting is a legitimate answer rather than a fudge.

Karat matters too, mostly for durability: 10K, 14K and 18K compared.

3. Choose the setting before the stone

The setting decides how the ring looks and how it lives, and it constrains which stones make sense.

A solitaire puts one stone on a plain band. Nothing competes with the diamond, which means the stone has to carry the ring on its own – flattering to a well-cut stone, unforgiving of a poor one.

A halo rings the centre stone with small diamonds, which makes the centre read larger and adds sparkle from the sides. It lets a smaller centre stone look substantial, at the cost of more detail to clean.

A three-stone setting flanks the centre with two smaller stones. It reads as more traditional and gives width on the finger without a much bigger centre stone.

Also think about height. A high setting lifts the stone and catches more light; a lower one snags less on clothing and sits flatter under a wedding band. If she works with her hands, lower is kinder.

4. Now choose the stone

With metal, setting and budget fixed, the stone becomes a straightforward optimisation. The four properties that drive price are cut, color, clarity and carat weight, explained in full in our guide to the 4Cs.

If you take one thing from that guide, take this: cut matters most. A well-cut stone with a slightly lower color grade will outperform a poorly-cut stone with better paperwork, every time, in ordinary light.

You also choose between lab-grown and natural here. They are the same material, graded the same way, and differ mainly on price and resale – the comparison is here. At a fixed budget, lab-grown generally buys noticeably more stone.

Shape is personal, but it has practical consequences. Round brilliants are the easiest to compare between sellers. Oval and emerald cuts read larger for their carat weight because more of the stone sits face-up. Princess, cushion and radiant sit between the two.

5. Get the size right

More proposals are undone by sizing than by taste. If you can measure a ring she already wears on that finger, do it – here is how. If you cannot, buy slightly large: a loose ring can be worn on a chain for a week; a ring that will not pass the knuckle cannot be worn at all.

Be aware that eternity and channel-set designs often cannot be resized, so on those the size has to be right at the point of order.

6. Check the practical terms before you buy

Before committing, confirm the return window, what resizing is possible on that specific design, and how the piece is shipped and insured. Our returns policy and shipping terms set out both. If you would rather spread the cost, pay-over-time options may be available at checkout.

Where to start looking

Browse all engagement rings, narrow to solitaires, or compare lab-grown engagement rings if budget is the binding constraint. When you are ready to think about the band that will sit alongside it, start with wedding bands.
