Watch Lug Width and Replacement Band Guide

Quick answer

Measure the inside distance between your watch’s lugs in millimetres and buy a band of exactly that width. Then confirm how the band attaches (standard spring bars, quick-release, pass-through, or an expansion bracelet’s end pieces), and choose the length by measuring the band you already wear from end to end.

This guide expands on our Watch Band Size Guide with more detail on each step. IMPERVORA replacement bands are sold through our Etsy shop in widths from 10 mm to 24 mm. They are not made for any particular watch brand and are not for smartwatches.

What is lug width, and why does it matter most?

Lugs are the four short arms, sometimes called horns, that extend from the watch case and hold the band. Lug width is the inside distance between the two lugs at one end of the case. It is the single most important measurement for a replacement band.

The fit is unforgiving. A band 1 mm too wide will not go in between the lugs. A band 1 mm too narrow will look loose and can shift sideways on the spring bars, leaving visible gaps. Choose the width that matches exactly.

How do I measure lug width at home?

  1. Check the old strap first. Many original straps have the width printed on the back near the lug end, often as a single number such as 20.
  2. Use calipers if you have them. Measure straight across between the inside faces of the two lugs. Calipers give the cleanest reading.
  3. Or use a millimetre ruler. Lay the watch face up, hold the ruler across the gap between the lugs, and read the distance between the inside faces. Repeat two or three times.
  4. Measure the band end, too. With the strap still attached, the width of the strap where it meets the case should match the lug width.
  5. Round carefully. If the reading falls between two whole millimetres, measure again with calipers or ask before you order. Odd widths such as 19 mm and 21 mm exist, so do not assume an even number.

If you only have an inch ruler, convert using 1 inch = 25.4 mm, the exact definition published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In practice, lug widths are specified in millimetres, so a metric ruler or calipers will be far more accurate.

How does the band attach to the watch?

Width gets the band between the lugs; the attachment method decides whether it can be fitted at all. Our Etsy listings describe the attachment for each band.

Attachment typeHow it worksWhat to checkTool needed
Standard spring barsA spring-loaded bar runs through a tunnel at the end of the strap and clicks into small holes on the inside of each lugThat your watch has spring-bar holes; bars sized to your lug widthUsually a spring-bar tool
Quick-releaseSpring bars with a small built-in lever that retracts the barListing is marked quick-releaseNo tool
Pass-through (one-piece)A single strap threads under the watch between the case back and the barsEnough clearance under the case for the strap’s thicknessNone to fit the strap itself
Expansion and link braceletsAdjustable end pieces fit between the lugs on spring barsEach listing gives the lug-width range the end pieces fitUsually a spring-bar tool

Are spring bars included?

Spring bars are not listed as included with our bands. You can reuse the bars from your current strap if they are in good condition, or fit a new pair sized to your lug width. Spring bars wear over time, so a worn or bent bar is worth replacing rather than reusing.

What if my watch has fixed bars?

Some watches have bars that are part of the case and cannot be removed. A standard two-piece strap cannot be fitted to these. A pass-through strap, which threads under the watch, is the usual option, as long as there is clearance under the case.

How do I choose the right band length?

Each Etsy listing states the manufacturer’s length as Short, Regular or Long, with the measurement in inches. For two-piece straps this is the combined length of both pieces, not counting the watch case.

  • Measure what already fits. The most reliable method is to lay your current band flat and measure it end to end, adding both pieces together. Then pick the closest listed length.
  • Check where the buckle sits. On a band that fits well, the buckle pin usually lands near the middle holes, leaving room to loosen or tighten.
  • Mesh and expansion bands adjust differently. Mesh bands adjust with a sliding clasp; expansion bracelets stretch, so length is less critical.

What about the buckle and taper?

Many two-piece leather straps narrow, or taper, from the lug end toward the buckle. A strap might be 20 mm at the case and narrower at the buckle. Where the manufacturer states the buckle-end width, the listing shows it.

If you plan to reuse a buckle you already own, its inside width must match the strap’s buckle-end width, not its lug-end width. Most of our leather straps include two buckles, one yellow-tone and one silver-tone; the listing states exactly what is included.

Which band material suits which use?

Our Etsy shop carries leather, mesh, nylon, silicone and steel bands. The material changes how a band wears day to day:

MaterialCharacterPractical notes
LeatherClassic, softens with wearKeep dry where possible; water and sweat can mark leather
MeshMetal weave, slim profileAdjusts with a sliding clasp
NylonLight, casual, flexibleOften used as a pass-through style; check the listing
SiliconeSoft, easy to rinseSuits active wear
SteelDurable link or expansion stylesCheck the end-piece lug-width range on the listing

What are the most common fitting mistakes?

  • Measuring the outside of the lugs. The outside distance includes the thickness of both lugs and is always larger than the lug width. Measure between the inside faces.
  • Choosing by case diameter. Two watches with the same case size can have different lug widths. Case diameter is not a substitute for measuring.
  • Ignoring the taper. A strap that fits the lugs can still be the wrong width for a buckle you plan to reuse.
  • Forgetting clearance for pass-through straps. A thick strap may not fit under a watch that sits close to its bars.
  • Reusing tired spring bars. A bar that no longer springs back firmly can let the watch drop. When in doubt, fit a new pair sized to your lug width.

How do I fit a new band safely?

Work over a soft cloth on a table, never over a sink or a hard floor. With standard spring bars, use a spring-bar tool to compress one end of the bar, ease the strap out, then reverse the process with the new strap: seat one end of the bar in its lug hole, compress the other end, and slide it into place until it clicks.

After fitting, give each end of the strap a gentle tug and check that both bar ends are seated in their holes. Quick-release bars make this easier: pull the small lever, position the strap, release the lever and check it has locked. If you are not comfortable fitting a band yourself, a local watch repairer can do it quickly.

How do I keep a replacement band in good condition?

Leather lasts longest when it is kept dry, allowed to air out between wears, and kept away from perfume and lotions. Silicone and nylon can be rinsed with plain water and left to dry. Metal bands benefit from an occasional wipe with a soft cloth; our jewelry care guide covers general cleaning habits that apply to metal pieces you wear every day.

Frequently asked questions

Will your bands fit my brand of watch?

We do not make brand-specific bands or claim compatibility with any watch brand. A band fits when the lug width, the attachment type and the length all match your watch, so measure using the steps above.

Do your bands work with smartwatches?

No. Our replacement bands are not for smartwatches.

Are spring bars included?

Spring bars are not listed as included. Reuse your watch’s bars or fit a pair sized to your lug width. Listings marked quick-release have spring bars with built-in levers.

My lug width measures between two sizes. What should I do?

Measure again with calipers, check the back of your old strap for a printed width, or contact us before you order. An exact match matters more than anything else.

Where do I buy IMPERVORA watch bands?

Through our Etsy shop, which carries widths from 10 mm to 24 mm.
