Understanding Karat and Color

Pure gold is 24 karat and far too soft to hold a stone or survive being worn, so every piece of gold jewelry is an alloy. The karat number states how much of that alloy is gold: 10K is 41.7 percent, 14K is 58.5 percent, 18K is 75 percent. That one number drives price, color depth and scratch resistance, and it moves them in opposite directions – higher karat means richer color and a softer surface.

The color comes from what the gold is mixed with. Copper pushes the alloy toward rose, silver and palladium toward white, and a balance of both keeps it yellow. White gold is finished with a thin rhodium plating for brightness; that plating wears through over years of contact and can be renewed by a jeweler. Yellow and rose gold carry their color all the way through and never need re-plating.

For a ring worn every day, 14K is the usual compromise and 10K the most scratch-resistant of the three. For earrings, pendants and pieces worn occasionally, durability matters less and the case for 18K is stronger. Every listing on this site carries its karat stamp, so none of this has to be guessed at.
