Chains

Chains sold on their own, to wear alone or to carry a pendant. Cable is the largest group, followed by box, Franco, curb and Miami Cuban, in yellow gold, sterling silver, white gold and rose gold, from $62 to $32,485. Two things decide the buy: gauge, because a fine chain sits closer to the skin but carries less weight safely, and clasp type, since a lobster clasp is easier to fasten one-handed than a spring ring. If you want the pendant included rather than separate, see pendants.

Choosing a Chain: Link, Width and Metal

A chain is judged on three things, and only one of them is the metal. The link style sets its character: a Cuban or curb link is broad and lies flat against the skin, a box or Franco link is squarer and more discreet, and a rope link is the one that catches the most light. None is better made than another. They simply wear differently.

Width matters more than most people expect. Under about 2 mm a chain reads as a layering piece and disappears under a collar; from roughly 5 mm upward it is the piece, worn on its own. If you intend to hang a pendant from it, match the chain to the weight of what it carries rather than to the pendant's size, which is why the pendant listings quote a weight.

Construction is the detail that decides how long a chain lasts. A solid chain is exactly that; a hollow or semi-solid one uses less gold for the same outward width, which is why two chains of identical millimetre width can differ several times over in price. Both are legitimate, but a hollow link is harder to repair once crushed. Karat stamp tells you gold content rather than quality: 14k is 58.5 per cent gold, 10k is 41.7 per cent and correspondingly harder. If you are shopping by metal rather than by style, our gold chains page gathers the gold pieces in one place.

What length should I buy?

On most adults an 18-inch chain sits at the collarbone, 20 to 22 inches sits just below it, and 24 inches and longer falls on the chest. Length is listed on every product page, and a chain worn over clothing generally wants to be one size longer than one worn against the skin.

Is a heavier chain always better?

No. Gram weight tells you how much metal is present, which affects price and durability, but a heavier chain is not more valuable per gram and is not necessarily better suited to you. A thin solid chain will usually outlast a wide hollow one.
