Settings: choose by stone size in millimeters

Each setting is made for one stone size and shape. Measure your stone with calipers or a stone gauge: the diameter for a round stone, or length × width for a fancy shape such as a 6 × 4 mm oval. Then pick the listing or option that matches exactly. Carat figures in listings are diamond-weight equivalents and approximate; other gemstones of the same size weigh differently, so always choose by millimeters, not carats.

• Prong and basket settings hold the stone with 2, 3, 4 or 6 prongs; a basket adds a gallery below the stone. Listings say whether a style is tall, low, tapered or double-claw.
• Bezel settings surround the stone with a metal wall pushed over its edge. Cabochon bezels are for flat-backed cabochons.
• Fancy shape settings are listed by shape and length × width.
• Most settings arrive semi-polished (tumbled), ready for your final polish after setting; each listing states its finish.

Bails: check the inside opening

A bail listing gives the inside opening in millimeters, for example 2 × 2 mm on a small circle bail or 4.6 × 2.5 mm on a snap-on bail. The opening must be larger than the thickest part of the chain that has to pass through it, including the clasp if the bail must slide over it. Styles include pinch, snap-on, tapered and rabbit-ear. Clasps: size by length and width

Clasp sizes are given as length × width in millimeters; a 7 × 2.75 mm lobster clasp is a common size for everyday chains. Choose a clasp in proportion to the chain, and attach it with a jump ring of matching metal.

Connectors and jump rings

Jump rings and connectors join a clasp to a chain, a charm to a bail, or one element to the next. An open jump ring can be twisted open and closed; a soldered ring cannot open, which makes it more secure for a clasp. The shop also lists link connectors, earring posts and backs, and charms with jump rings; if you need a connector that is not listed, message us with the metal and dimensions before you order. Earring findings

Earring settings are sold singly unless the listing says otherwise, so order two for a pair. As with any setting, they are listed by stone shape and size in millimeters, with 3-prong and 4-prong round styles and fancy shapes such as heart. Check the stone size against your stones before ordering; stones are not included.

Watch bands: 6 to 24 mm

A replacement band fits only if three things match your watch: the lug width, the way the band attaches and the length. Our bands are not made for any particular watch brand and are not for smartwatches.

• Lug width is the inside distance between the lugs, in millimeters. Most listings run from 10 mm to 24 mm, and a few small expansion bands fit lugs from 6 mm; choose the width that matches exactly.
• Attachment: most two-piece straps fit watches with spring bars. Spring bars are not listed as included, so reuse your watch’s bars or fit a pair sized to your lug width. Quick-release listings have built-in levers.
• Length is stated as Short, Regular or Long, with the measurement in inches. Compare it with your current band laid flat.

Gold karat and color

10K is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.5% and 18K is 75%. Higher karat gives a richer color and a softer metal. Some white gold items are rhodium-plated; where the manufacturer specifies plating, the listing says so. Allow normal manufacturing tolerance on all dimensions; photos are enlarged to show detail.
