Choosing a Women's Wedding Band
A wedding band is worn more or less permanently, which makes durability and comfort more important than they are for any other piece of jewelry. Two decisions drive both: the karat of the gold and the profile of the band.
Higher karat gold is purer and warmer in color, but it is also softer. 10K is the hardest-wearing of the three and holds up best to daily knocks; 18K has the richest color and marks more easily; 14K sits between them and is the most common choice for a ring worn every day. White gold is rhodium-plated over a yellow alloy, so it will need re-plating periodically to keep its bright finish — that is normal maintenance, not a defect.
Profile matters as much as metal. A comfort-fit band is domed on the inside so it slides over the knuckle more easily and sits without pinching, which suits wider bands in particular. Flat bands sit lower and pair more neatly against an engagement ring. If the band will be stacked with a solitaire, check that the two sit flush; a straight band against a high-set center stone can leave a gap that catches on clothing.
Eternity and channel-set bands set stones all the way around or along the top. They look substantial and wear well, but they generally cannot be resized, so the size has to be right at the point of order.
Which gold karat wears best day to day?
10K is the most scratch-resistant of the three karats offered here and 18K the softest. 14K is the usual compromise for a ring that is never taken off.
Can a diamond-set band be resized later?
Usually not. Once stones run around the band or along a channel, resizing risks the settings. Confirm the size before ordering, or use the 30-day return window.
