Sizing a Bracelet That Is Worn Every Day
A bracelet should sit loose enough to rotate on the wrist and tight enough not to slide over the hand. In practice that means adding about three quarters of an inch to a snug wrist measurement for a flat link bracelet, and closer to an inch for a thick, high-profile one, because a heavier bracelet needs the extra room to sit properly rather than binding.
Link style decides how it wears. Curb and Miami Cuban links lie flat against the wrist and are the most common choice for a piece worn daily. Figaro breaks the rhythm with alternating link lengths. Box and Franco are square in section and sit densely without twisting. Rope and wheat throw more light but have more surface for dirt to collect in.
The clasp is the part that fails first on a bracelet worn constantly. Lobster clasps are the most secure of the common types; spring rings are lighter and easier to open one-handed but wear out sooner. A safety catch on a heavier bracelet is worth having, because a bracelet that comes loose is far more likely to be lost than a necklace.
